Embrunais
Embrun
is a charming little town set on a hill above the river Durance.
It is only 12 km away from Savines, on the way to Briançon.
Capital of the Alps during the Roman era, it became a cathedral
town in the 4th c. (the first bishop was St Marcellin) Archdiocese
from the 9th c. to the 18th c., Embrun has kept many remains
from its rich historical past.

The cathedral of "Notre Dame du Réal" ( 12th and
13th c.) That monument is the most important in the French Alps.
It was built between 1170 and 1220. It was strongly inspired
from Lombard traditions.

Don't
miss the organ, given by Louis XI to the city and the treasure
of Chapel Sainte Anne next to the cathedral. You will find there
sacerdotal clothes, jewelery, paintings, statues and ancient documents.

The

forget to visit the house of the Chanonges too. It is just opposite
the cathedral.

The
Tour Brune ( 13th c.) is opposite the cathedral. It is now a
museum dedicated to a permanent exhibition of the park of Les
Ecrins. |
Standing
on the Rock of Embrun, the Archdiocese garden offers a wonderful
viewpoint. You will find a viewpoint indicator there.

Embrun is a very nice city. There are lots of shops and
it's only 10 mn far from Savines (by car) A good place to spend
an evening.
